Young guns show battling spirit to win at Basford

28 July 2015

Goals from Fletcher and Baldwin are enough to defeat Evo-Stik Division One (South) outfit.

Our youth team recorded an impressive pre-season victory as they came from behind to record a 2-1 win over Basford United at a rain-soaked Greenwich Avenue on Tuesday night.

The Stags fell behind midway through the first half when Fabian Smith sent Sam Wilson the wrong way with a spot-kick – just a couple of minutes after Mansfield’s custodian had saved a penalty from another Basford player.

Dan Fletcher soon levelled things up – showing good footwork inside the area before emphatically firing home, following Drew Gibson’s through ball.

Both teams shared the chances after the re-start as the North Nottinghamshire heavens opened, but the Stags’ hard-work and desire paid off two minutes from time when big defender Kane Baldwin (pictured) was on-hand to convert from a rebound after Anthony Dwyer had been denied by the ‘keeper.

Delighted with the result against their Evo-Stik Division One (South) counterparts, Head of Academy coaching Mark Peters said afterwards: “I thought it was a very productive workout for the boys. I think their fitness sowed in the last 20 minutes and we dominated the game and it’s always nice to finish with a win.

“It was also a great opportunity for some of the youth team to get minutes on the pitch against what is a very good mens outfit.”
