Defender pleased as Stags battle to win over Swindon

9 March 2024

Defender Lewis Brunt says Mansfield ‘battled’ to another important three points as Stags earned a 3-2 victory over Swindon Town at One Call Stadium.

The Leicester City loanee was named the sponsor’s Man of the Match following the contest.

Mansfield now sit three points clear atop of Sky Bet League Two, five points ahead of fourth placed MK Dons with a game in hand.

The 23-year-old felt the game became physical but he was pleased with how he and his teammates dealt with it. Speaking to iFollow Stags after the match, Brunt said: “It was definitely a more physical game than the previous one.

“The lads battled in, you can’t take anything away from [any] player out there.

“We always knew it might be one of those games, long balls, a physical battle. We got the three points and that’s all that matters.

“We dug in, we got important blocks in, good clearances at the end, especially during the last ten minutes, they threw the kitchen sink [at us].

“[The game] Got a bit stretched, but that’s football. It’s going to happen. The three points are all that matters at this stage of the season.”

Stags demonstrated strong attacking intent during the second period as Davis Keillor-Dunn (51’) and Will Swan (68’) struck the hosts to victory and Brunt was delighted for his teammates: “It was a bit mad [after the break].

“Davo [Keillor-Dunn] set it alight with the first [goal of the second-half for Mansfield] and we never looked back from there.”

On Swan’s goal he said: “He’s been brilliant the last few weeks, always putting himself about and getting in the goals. [It was] Another good goal from him today.”

Mansfield’s number 24 hadn’t realised he had been named as sponsor’s Man of the Match and said: “I don’t listen too much to the tannoy, I’m trying to concentrate on the game.

“I’m just taking it one game at a time and enjoying my football.

“[I’ve got] Flinty [Aden Flint] to the right of me, Baily Cargill to the left and Pymy [Christy Pym] behind me. That’s hundreds of league games’ [worth of experience] there. I’m just learning every single day in training and every game.

“I’m loving my football here at the minute. Playing at the One Call [Stadium], I’m really enjoying it.”
