Pym: Stags’ solid structure has been ‘brilliant’

10 January 2024

Goalkeeper Christy Pym has praised Mansfield’s structural organisation as the key to a ‘brilliant’ 2023/24 campaign so far.

Stags have now played 25 league matches this season, losing just twice.

The amber and blue possess the best defensive record in Sky Bet League Two, conceding only 20 times.

Speaking to iFollow Stags yesterday in a pre-Morecambe news conference, Christy said: “The first half of the season has been brilliant.

“It’s set up now, the second half of the season, we now have to go and deliver the same sort of performances that we have so far.

“I’ve not been called into action too much. We’ve not conceded too many goals.

“We’re not scoring as many as we’d like but because we’re not conceding many it gives us the chance to win the games.”

The shot-stopper went on to highlight the defensive contributions of some of those in front of him.

“I think if you look at the players we’ve brought in [they have all had superb impacts],” he said.

“Bowz [Jordan Bowery] has been an ever-present, he’s been brilliant.

“[Summer recruit] Aden Flint has shown why he’s had the career he’s had; he blocks everything.

“As a goalkeeper when the ball is coming into the box, you’re in two minds whether it’s yours or not but when you know you have Aden Flint there who heads everything you can say ‘okay I’ll stay at home and let him deal with it’ and he does.

“Brunty [Lewis Brunt], when he’s been back there has been fantastic like Baily [Cargill] when he’s come in, he’s done really well at left-back and centre-half.

“That has been the main platform that I have not had to be called upon too often, there’s not been too many opportunities.

“Knowing that the team in front of you are not going to make you too busy in a game [helps].

“I’m playing well, I feel good at the minute but it’s just about taking it game by game.”

The former Peterborough United ‘keeper has kept the joint-most clean sheets in the EFL since the 2014-15 season – alongside David Stockdale on 98.

“I’m very proud of that stat and it shows that I have probably played in a few good teams and had a few good defences in front of me.

“I want to try and get over 100 and be there [leading] by myself now.”

On the weekend’s opponents, Morecambe, Christy added: “We don’t fear anyone.

“Away from home we know that it makes no difference to us – away or at home – we perform the same way.

“We take the game to whoever we play.

“I think that will be the plan on Saturday.”
