Boss highlights quality of Stags’ opener

13 January 2024

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough highlighted the quality of Baily Cargill’s opener during this afternoon’s 1-1 draw at Morecambe.

The defender smashed the ball home for his third of the season following some fine passing in the final third.

Stags sit third in Sky Bet League Two following the point with the Shrimps.

Speaking post-match, Nigel said: “It was [a superb goal].

“There were two or three brilliant passes leading up to it.

“The ball was played to Davis Keillor-Dunn’s feet, he laid it back for Ollie Clarke and we all thought he was going to shoot.

“He’s spotted Baily in space on the left-hand side and got [us]the 1-0.

“It should’ve been worth the three points.”

On the result, the boss added: “[It’s] A good point but not when you’re 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go.

“It was a poor, poor goal from our point of view.

“Defensively, both full-backs should do better.

“I thought we got over the ten minutes after we’d scored. They had a little go at us.

“We were in control then and then it’s just one through ball and a cross and all of a sudden, we’re pinned back at 1-1.

“We shouldn’t concede that goal from being 1-0 up.”

The match was limited to few opportunities at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

“It was a typical January League Two game.

“It was windy, the pitch is bobbly,” he said.

“It’s very difficult conditions for League Two players to get the ball down and play.

“It’s difficult then to create things for both sides.

“If you’d said before the game that we were going to get a point here, on the back of the loss last week, [we’d take it].

“We have come for three. We tried to get three.

“It’s just the timing and the nature of the [Morecambe] goal that is frustrating.”

Calum Macdonald was replaced at half-time by fellow left-back, Stephen McLaughlin.

“He [Calum Macdonald] was injured.

“His calf cramped up in the last few minutes of the half.

“He couldn’t get going again at half-time at all.

“It was a necessary substitution.”

Over 1,100 Stags’ fans travelled to Lancashire this afternoon.

“They [the fans] should have been rewarded with three points,” the gaffer said.

“We were going for it in the last few minutes, trying to get a goal in added time as well.

“Probably, a draw is a fair result on the balance of play but when you are 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go it’s disappointing.”
