Manager previews Forest Green contest

8 April 2024

Nigel Clough has previewed tomorrow’s Sky Bet League Two encounter at home to Forest Green tomorrow.

Stags face the Gloucestershire outfit on Tuesday evening at One Call Stadium which will kick-off at 7.45pm.

The amber and blue will then take on promotion rivals MK Dons on Saturday before two home games in a week against Accrington Stanley and Gillingham, followed by a final day clash away at Barrow.

When asked about the priorities of Tuesday’s battle with Forest Green, the manager said: “Win the game. Nothing else. The performances don’t matter at this time of the season.

“Even on Saturday I thought we were below par [in the loss to Crawley] and we still ended up with 60% possession and 22 shots at goal, one less than at Bradford where we won 5-1.

“They [Crawley] had 12 shots, I think similar to Bradford, but they put four away.

“In any game at any level it’s the ones who take their chances at the right times in the game.

“That’s why the performances are secondary really in terms of your possession stats and all that, it’s [about] who’s going to take their chances at the right times in the game and you’ll win or lose it upon that.”

The manager then went on to speak about the challenge Forest Green will pose and the 4-0 victory in the reverse fixture at The New Lawn in February.

He said: ”It wasn’t a 4-0. I said at the time that it flattered us. They played some really good stuff against us and caused us problems.

“Forest Green went to Crewe the other week and were three up in the first-half so anybody’s capable of it in the league if you give them that opportunity so that’ll be the first priority, to start well and if we can get the first goal [we will] take it from there.

“They’re not a bad team and not a bad squad. They’ll certainly be fighting and Steve [Cotterill] will have them going right to the end.”

Speaking about what considerations he will make when picking his starting 11 for Tuesday’s game, the gaffer said: “Who’s going to handle the situation the best is the most important [thing] but there’s one or two carrying knocks after Saturday so we’ll assess it from there.”
