Manager pleased with Tranmere fightback

28 November 2023

Manager Nigel Clough says it was important that the Stags headed into a 10-day break with just a single defeat in 19 league games, following Mansfield’s steely 2-2 draw with Tranmere.

Stags twice battled from behind to preserve their unbeaten league home record this term.

Rhys Oates cleverly tapped the hosts level on 37 minutes to cancel out Charlie Jolley’s opener for the visitors. Rob Apter restored Tranmere’s lead on 62 minutes before Will Swan powered in Mansfield’s second to draw level on 79.

Speaking to iFollow Stags after the match, the gaffer stressed the importance of not heading into the break on the back of two defeats.

“We’re on the back of our first defeat of the season on Saturday, [we] didn’t want to lose back-to-back games,” he said.

“It would’ve been nice to go into the break with three points, but I think we’re in pretty good shape all in all.

“We’re a couple of points off where we want to be, at two points per game. I think if we win our game in hand we go second, so that’s not too bad a situation to be in.

“I think to go into this break on the back of two defeats would’ve been demoralising, after the start we’ve had to the season.

“The more [an unbeaten run] gets built up, the bigger the down [is when it ends]. You’re not used to losing games. So it was a tough one at times tonight but it’s good not to lose.

“The lads need a breather so they’re going to have a few days break and then we’ll be back in next week. It’s come at a good time, it really has.”

Speaking further about the match, he said: “We’ve had to come from behind twice at home and in those circumstances, especially with ten minutes to go, it’s a good point,” he said.

“The goals we conceded were very unlike what we’ve been like here at One Call [Stadium] so far this season. We’d only conceded three in eight games.

“I was very pleased with the way we tried to play. We got it down, I thought there were some very good moves. Our final pass, our final cross wasn’t quite there tonight.

“In terms of how we played, nothing has changed in the last three or four months.”

The manager was pleased to see striker Will Swan return to scoring ways to claim the fourth goal of the game with 11 minutes of normal time to play.

Nigel said: “[Swan’s goal was the] Highlight of the night.

“First of all, I thought his general play looked sharp, it looked bright.

“He’s been unbelievably patient this season. He hasn’t quite hit the heights of last season, which is why he’s been on the bench. I think he’s going to play a major role for us in the next six months. [I’m] Absolutely delighted for him to get the goal.”
