Defender: Stags’ ‘spirit’ is high

16 December 2023

Defender Baily Cargill hailed Mansfield Town’s ‘spirit’ following a fine 3-1 win away at Crawley Town this afternoon.

Stags enjoyed their first match following a 17-day absence with the former Forest Green Rovers man netting the first of the encounter.

Speaking to iFollow Stags post-match, he said: “We’ve got loads of experience and so many older heads that have played at such a good level that are seeing us through games.

“The young lads are doing well as well.

“We’re playing really well as a team and spirit is high.

“Long may it continue.”

On his second goal of the season, the centre-back added: “It was a great ball from Oatesy.

“We did that a few times early on [find Rhys Oates] and he stayed wide because their line was so high that we just hit him and he crossed it.

“I picked the ball up early - earlier than the defender - and just managed to guide it in.”

Mansfield faced Crawley following over two weeks without a fixture.

“Ten days off was a good thing and then 17 days was maybe just a little bit too long,” said Cargill.

“We haven’t played for a long time so I think you could tell in some of our play today that that was the case.

“Going into this next period [however] it [the break] will help us.”

Mansfield controlled possession expertly after the interval.

“When we got the [second] goal it killed their momentum.

“It was a good performance, a professional performance and a great three points away from home.”

On the squad’s competitiveness, the defender said: “The squad is looking healthy at the minute.

“There are a couple of injuries but I don’t think they are long term.

“There are so many games in such a short space of time that we’re going to need everyone over the next few weeks.”
