Consistent left-back Mal Benning is into his sixth season at the club after an excellent five years at One Call Stadium.

Benning joined the club in the summer of 2015 and enjoyed an eye-catching first season, becoming a firm fans' favourite with a number of sensational goals. 

He won the Goal of the Season award for a jaw-dropping volley against Newport County in October 2015, an effort which came out on top of a supporters' poll which also included two other Benning strikes. 

He continued his excellent form in the 2016-17 season and was awarded the Chairman's Player of the Season award for the second year running at the Annual Awards Dinner.

The 27-year-old, who was previously with Walsall, featured on more than 50 occasions for Dean Smith's team and also spent time on loan at York City prior to joining the Stags.

Born in Sandwell, West Midlands, he graduated through the academy ranks at the Banks's Stadium and signed a professional contract in 2011.

After a loan spell at Evesham United, he made his professional debut for the Saddlers in November 2012 and continued to improve week-on-week.

He spent time on loan at York City in 2014-15 and made nine appearances in the Minstermen's successful battle to stave off relegation.

Benning was named in the EFL's League Two Team of the Season in the 2018/19 campaign following his superb displays in defence for the Stags.

The defender is the longest serving player in the current Mansfield squad.
