Report: Stags 3-2 Swindon

9 March 2024

Mansfield Town edged past Swindon in an action-packed encounter at One Call Stadium to remain top of Sky Bet League Two.

Mansfield may have put the game to bed by half-time, but instead led courtesy of a solitary early goal from Lucas Akins.

The Robins roared back and a frantic 25 minute period in the second-half saw both sides score twice.

Davis Keillor-Dunn netted his 18th goal of the season while substitute Will Swan climbed off the bench to head home the winner after Swindon twice levelled.

As part of three changes made from Tuesday’s 2-1 loss at home to MK Dons, George Williams replaced Jordan Bowery at right-back.

Hiram Boateng was introduced for George Maris in midfield and Tom Nichols came into the side for Will Swan in attack.

Stags were on the front foot from kick-off and should have gone ahead after three minutes.

Left-back Baily Cargill sent a dangerous ball into the box from the touchline and as the visitors failed to clear an unmarked Hiram Boateng could only fire into the North Stand from ten yards.

But Mansfield needn’t have worried as Lucas Akins put Stags in the box seat less than a minute later with a go-ahead goal.

Latching on to Davis Keillor-Dunn’s low pass, the frontman broke clear of the Swindon defence to strike low into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

The Robins were penned inside their own half of the field and goalkeeper Jack Bycroft was needed in the ninth minute to fingertip aside Keillor-Dunn’s lovely 20-yard curling effort which looked destined to find the net.

Stags were in rampant mood and Akins and Quinn linked up on 13 minutes to again send a warning shot across the bows.

A neat one-two on the inside left flank ended with Akins striking the outside of the post from close range.

Swindon had a rare opportunity to test Stags’ goalkeeper Christy Pym on 17 minutes after Paul Glatzel was upended a yard outside the box but captain Charlie Austin lashed the subsequent free-kick into the defensive wall.

Stags were soon back down the other end and Keillor-Dunn again came close midway through the half.

Quinn and Cargill combined on the left channel to play in Keillor-Dunn, whose strike from the edge of the goal area took a deflection to balloon over the bar.

After the game entered a quiet spell, Pym made his first stop of the match by comfortably claiming Glatzel’s curling attempt from the edge of the box on 34 minutes and Austin missed a much better chance a minute later by heading over from eight yards following Frazer Blake-Tracey’s cross.

In the search of a second goal, Stags broke forward and Nichols then showed fine footwork to beat his man and fire at Byrcoft from inside the box.

Referee David Rock produced the game’s first yellow card as Swindon’s Conor McCarthy pulled Keillor-Dunn to the ground as he looked to break forward inside the centre circle.

Stags survived a scare two minutes after the interval and Pym had to be alert on his goalline to keep out Aaron Drinan’s close-range header from a corner.

Swindon had a new-found confidence in the second period and levelled on 50 minutes.

Stags failed to clear their lines after Swindon attacked inside the box and Drinan drilled a shot into the ground which spun into the net.

But less than a minute later Mansfield were back in front.

Nichols slipped it to Keillor-Dunn and the attacking midfielder curled superbly from 15 yards to beat a diving Bycroft.

Mansfield’s tails were up and Akins was next to fire at goal, but his trickled effort from the left of the box was pushed onto the post by Bycroft’s fingertips.

Swindon drew level again on 59 minutes in a frantic start to the second period.

An unmarked Drinan was afforded time to pick his spot as he directed his header into the far corner from 12 yards following a cross on the right flank.

As the game ticked past the hour, Akins was booked for leading with a high foot near the halfway line.

Stags had to endure a mini spell of Swindon pressure and on 64 minutes, Glatzel rifled into the grasp of a diving Pym from the edge of the area.

Nigel Clough made a triple change on 65 minutes.

Hiram Boateng, Stephen Quinn and Tom Nichols left the field to be replaced by George Maris, Ollie Clarke and Will Swan.

And Swan made an instant impact by heading Stags back in front on 68 minutes.

Clarke was the architect on the left with a fine clipped cross for Swan to nod in off the post from close range.

On 79, Stags almost sealed the victory as Maris won the ball cleverly in the corner to feed Keillor-Dunn, whose low drive was denied by Bycroft.

At the other end, Swindon surged forward on the counter punch and substitute Rushian Hepburn-Murphy missed a sitter from ten yards after a square pass from the right.

Jordan Bowery replaced Keillor-Dunn with nine minutes of normal time remaining.

Stags looked to put the game out of Swindon’s reach and Swan came close when his looping header was tipped over the bar by a back-peddling Bycroft.

Flint hammered a shot wide of the target following a corner and minutes later Clarke saw his effort beaten away by the over-worked Bycroft.

In stoppage time, Akins pulled it back from the goalline to an unmarked Maris and his low shot was denied by Swindon’s Tom Brewitt on the line.

And after eight nervy minutes of stoppage time, Stags kept out plucky Swindon to earn an important win.
