Youth Preview: Grimsby v Stags

7 March 2024

Mansfield Town under-18s face Grimsby Town in the semi-final of the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday (11.30am kick-off).

Stags recorded an excellent 9-0 win against Huddersfield last weekend with McKeal Abdullah (five), Ronnie Kokkinos, Dan Organ and Che Whitman Brown (two) scoring for Mansfield.

Professional development phase lead coach Steve Chettle discussed his side's latest win.

"I've been saying week after week that we do need to start taking our chances at some point - a team will feel the full wrath of what we've been trying to do and Saturday was the game.

"It was only 3-0 at half-time but the second-half performance from the whole group was fantastic and we were well worthy of a 9-0 win it possibly could've been more.

"We took our chances when they came but even in the first-half, we feel we could've been six up at half-time but we scored the three and it's always important to keep a clean sheet.

"Taking nine chances is a big improvement on scoring our threes and fours."

Jakub Kruszynski featured for 30 minutes in a Central League fixture at RH Academy yesterday against Huddersfield.which was the attacking midfielder's first match since sustaining a serious hamstring injury earlier in the season.

"He's not fully ready," said the coach.

"It was a tip-toe exercise for Jakub to come back after being out since August.

"We've still got to be a little bit careful with Jakub because he's still not fully fit and it was just an introduction back into the team."

Mansfield face Grimsby this weekend in the Youth Alliance League Cup semi-final. Stags lost narrowly 2-1 to the Mariners in the league.

"We're still looking for revenge from the league defeat about three weeks ago.

"It's the semi-final of the cup so it's a big day for us. We travel to Grimsby full of hope and hopefully we will continue this good spell of results we have had with the under-18s."

Asked about what his final words to the players are likely to be before taking to the pitch this weekend, Steve said: "It will be to make the most of the opportunity.

"Not everybody gets opportunities to play in semi-finals of cups.

"It gives us a chance to get to the final of a national competition so it will be a big challenge for us."
