Coach: We'll give it everything in final seven

26 March 2024

First team coach Andy Garner says Stags will work as hard as they possibly can to deliver success in the remaining seven games of the season as Mansfield prepare for an important Easter double header.

The amber and blue, sitting top of the table, travel to third-placed Wrexham on Good Friday before hosting Accrington Stanley at One Call Stadium on Easter Monday.

The first team coach today applauded the Stags’ faithful for their support this season and said the squad will do their utmost to finish the season in the top three.

When asked to deliver a message to the fanbase, he said: “Keep supporting us like you have been doing home and away.

“The amount of fans that go to the away games is staggering. We appreciate that.

“There’s no better feeling for us to go and clap them and thank them for their efforts.

“They have to keep supporting us, keep cheering us on and helping us, because we’ll need it. We just want them to keep supporting us the best they can because we’re going to try as hard as we possibly can to get promoted.

“We’ll keep them level-headed and as calm as we possibly can.”

Stags head to Wrexham with only three points separating the two sides and both having seven games remaining.

“We look forward to training and having a little bit of fun, but also working incredibly hard. The players know what we have to do, we know what we have to do. It’s about getting three points at the minute.

“We want to play well, of course we do, but at the minute it’s about getting three points.

“We’re going to Wrexham, we’re top of the league, are playing well at the moment and are looking forward to the game and that’s what we’ll be telling the players. We’re top of the league for a reason. We’re a good side and hopefully the Wrexham game will be a good one.

“Both teams will be trying very hard to win the football match. It’s an important stage of the season. If we can’t win it, then don’t lose it, that’ll be our message. But we’ll certainly be going for it, that’s for sure.”

The coach has been impressed with the upturn in form of forward Will Swan, who has netted eight goals in 13 matches this calendar year.

“I think at the minute we’re seeing the real Swanny and why we’ve signed him. He’s a good player.

“In the last few weeks I’ve had the opportunity of having a sit down with him and a talk to him, simply because we needed more from him. We needed more in terms of holding the ball up and scrapping and fighting.

“We know he can do all the running and can score us a goal but his whole game needed to improve a bit and in the last two games it’s really shown. He’s been fighting for the ball and we need that. You can’t just let the centre-halves have the ball easily or win the ball easily. You have to be fighting and scrapping and he’s doing that now. His all-round game right now is very good.”

Meanwhile, Baily Cargil is set to undergo a scan on his knee, while fellow defenders George Williams and Callum Johnson are in light training but are doubts for Friday’s trip to North Wales.
