Quinn: This is a great club to play for

20 February 2024

Experienced midfielder Stephen Quinn says it’s ‘good to be a part of a club that’s bringing a community together’, as he and the players aim to reward the Stags’ fanbase with success at the end of the season.

Mansfield sit in second place in Sky Bet League Two with 14 games remaining.

And the 38-year-old today summed up the campaign so far when speaking to iFollow Stags at a news conference from RH Academy, the club’s training ground, saying: “We can’t complain really. [We’re] Improving season-on-season. We’re looking pretty strong. The squad is looking healthy and we have players coming back.

“The gaffer and the staff have built this squad over the last two to three season to compete.

“We are looking stronger in a lot of areas [than in previous seasons] and myself and Lucas [Akins] were speaking about this in the warm-up at the Walsall game, how it’s so good to be a part of a club that’s bringing a community together and growing season-on-season. There’s a great vibe around the place.

“The relationship with the fans, me personally seeing it building over the past few years and the fanbase growing. We’d like to bring these guys some success this season.”

The 37-year-old asked this of the Mansfield faithful, ahead of Saturday’s visit of Salford City to One Call Stadium: “We need to make the One Call a bit of a fortress and I do try and challenge the fans to give us a good reception to get us over the line.

“It's up to us to get the bums off the seats but this relationship throughout the last seasons is growing. The atmosphere around the place is electric. Saturday was absolutely bouncing, it was brilliant to see [at Walsall]. We need to make it a fortress and create a lot of noise on Saturday.

“I’m enjoying the process over the last few seasons, especially this season where we’re there or there abouts, so why not give us one final push.”

Previewing the last 14 games of the season, Quinn reiterated the good character of the squad and said: “There are more twists and turns to come, you can’t get too high or too low and have to keep a calm head.

“That filters through from the gaffer, he’s vastly experienced, all the coaches are really. That filters through the club, he never gets carried away.

“It’s about keeping standards, drilling them home in training. The lads are ‘on it’. We have such a good bunch. We have a group that back each other and are willing to go the distance.”
