Youth preview: Grimsby v Stags

15 February 2024

Mansfield Town under-18s travel to Grimsby Town this Saturday in the Youth Alliance League (11am kick-off).

Stags were 3-1 winners at RH Academy in their latest encounter against Lincoln City.

Professional development phase lead coach Steve Chettle offered his reflections on the victory.

“We weren’t at our greatest to be fair," said Steve. "We started the game really poorly.

“We went a goal behind early on in the game.

“We hung in there and we equalised midway through the first-half through Finn Flanagan who scored a good goal from a set-play.

“In the second-half we were better. McKeal [Abdullah] scored two more goals which gave us a 3-1 win.

“That’s back-to-back 3-1 wins against a gritty opponent in Lincoln.”

On Flanagan and Abdullah’s fine goalscoring form recently, the coach added: “They’ve done really well for us. They’ve been a big help.

“The gaffer has kept them around the first team as well.

“They continue to play for our under-19s and they share the workload amongst all of the group.

“Finn’s scored two goals in two games and Mikey [McKeal] continues to score goals.”

The PDP lead coach went on to analyse his side’s excellent form.

“We’ve trained really well. Since they came back from Christmas, the players have had a great attitude towards their training.

“The training standards have gone up two or three notches and they take it into games.

“Even when we haven’t been great they’ve hung on in games and managed to stem the tide and get away on top.

“We score a lot of goals in the end of games as well.

“Grimsby is going to be tough.

“They were a tough opponent when we played them earlier in the year and we expect nothing different [this time around]."
