Mansfield Town under-18s face Doncaster Rovers this Saturday at RH Academy in the Youth Alliance League (11am kick-off).
Stags lost 3-0 last time out - away to Hartlepool - in a game Mansfield controlled large parts of.
Professional development phase lead coach Steve Chettle believes the scoreline did not show a true reflection of his side’s performance.
“The fixture was a good fixture for us – it was a long trip,” he said.
“The scoreline is very flattering toward Hartlepool, in our opinion.
“They had four attempts on target, we had 20.
“It’s really frustrating but it’s one of those anomalies where you think ‘that wasn’t a full reflection of the game.’”
On this weekend’s test against Doncaster, Steve said: “We watched them [Doncaster] play Huddersfield last week and they scored some really good goals.
“They play in a shape we’ve played a few times already.
“Notts County play the same shape and Harrogate. We’ve done well against them in the past with the home games we’ve had.
“We’re hoping to do the same on Saturday.”
After two months with the Academy, the former Nottingham Forest defender is pleased with his side’s development.
“We’re looking for progression which is what we’ve made.
“We’ve got a steady squad of players.
“We’ve got better – we have been creating more and we still look solid at the back.”
The weekend’s match will take place at RH Academy.
