Report: Retford 0-8 Stags

11 July 2023

Lucas Akins netted a second-half hat-trick as Stags began their pre-season schedule with an 8-0 win away at Retford United.

The 34-year-old starred as Mansfield struck the net seven times in the second period after James Gale’s goal put Stags 1-0 ahead at the break.

And the eventual scoreline would have been greater had it not been for some impressive stops from Retford goalkeeper Tom Crosby.

Aaron Lewis, who signed a two-year contract only a few hours before the contest, started the match in midfield.

Trialist Brennan Dickenson - the left-sided player formerly of Carlisle - was named in the starting XI.

Captain Ollie Clarke and out-of-contract defender James Perch missed out because of precautionary knocks.

Stags dominated the ball in the early stages and Retford goalkeeper Tom Crosby was first tested after 18 minutes when he denied Louis Reed’s close range shot with his legs following a corner.

Moments later, forward James Gale struck goalwards but his vicious effort from the left of the box took a deflection to direct it off target.

On 24 minutes, Gale tried to turn provider with a dangerous cross from the right, and as Retford looked to clear, Stephen Quinn hammered a strike into the ground and onto the roof of the net.

Stags broke the deadlock on 26 minutes when Gale found the net.

Aaron Lewis sent a perfect throughball to split the defence in two, and after striking against the advancing keeper with his first attempt, Gale made no mistake from the rebound.

Towards the end of the half, Louis Reed smacked a 22 yard free-kick into the Retford defensive wall, before Dickenson lashed a long-distance piledriver narrowly over the angle.

Commanding defender Kilgour tried his luck from a similar distance on 40 minutes, and witnessed the same outcome.

In the final chance of the half, Reed came close with a hit from the edge of the box, but Crosby went untested.

Retford’s Tom Wilson was shown a yellow card in the 44th minute for a late challenge on Stephen Quinn.

A fresh Stags’ XI at the interval saw Mansfield up the ante and they doubled their advantage just three minutes in.

Hiram Boateng clipped from the right to Lucas Akins, who did the rest with a lovely right-footed volley into the corner of the net.

And on 50 minutes it was 3-0 as George Maris directed a low ball into the box before it diverted into the Retford net off a home man.

The plucky hosts almost pulled one back with a low hit from the edge of the box which cannoned back off the left post, before Callum Johnson scribed his name onto the scoresheet after 70 minutes.

Tom Crosby did well to make an initial save from Boateng’s low drive but he could do little about the follow up as Johnson converted for Stags’ fourth.

Swan should have scored four minutes later when Maris teed him up inside the box, but the former Forest man’s crashing effort flew off target.

The same man took aim at goal on 75, with his crisp low shot this time taking a deflection to spin behind for a corner.

Crosby was again called into action when Swan fed Akins. And after bursting beyond the home defence, Akins’ low strike was denied by the Retford shot-stopper.

Swan made it five to Mansfield on 82 when he connected first to a ball from the flank and a minute later Akins prodded home to add to Stags’ tally following George Maris’ assist.

Akins his bagged a hat-trick on 84, to make it 7-0 to Mansfield, and on 88 minutes, with Retford tiring, Davis Keillor-Dunn fired low into the far corner to complete a high-scoring second half.
