Report: Alfreton 0-4 Stags

15 July 2023

Goals from Will Swan, Rhys Oates, Jakub Kruszynski and Calum Macdonald helped Stags to a 4-0 win in a promising display at near-neighbours Alfreton.

It was the second pre-season workout for Nigel Clough’s men,an 8-0 win at Retford United in midweek.

Stags started in encouraging fashion and inside the third minute Stephen Quinn linked up well with Kieron Freeman on the left flank, with the latter sending a cross into the arms of Alfreton keeper George Willis.

At the other end, Liam Waldock blasted over the bar from the edge of the box in the Reds’ first opportunity.

But it was Mansfield who broke the deadlock after six minutes through Will Swan.

Davis Keillor-Dunn’s wonderfully weighted through ball saw Swan break the offside trap to race beyond the defence and slot home from eight yards.

The Reds tried to respond on 11 minutes when Alfreton frontman Ryan Taylor nodded wide from a left sided cross.

Stags almost had a second goal as Swan fed Keillor-Dunn, whose close range effort smacked into the leg of fellow forward Lucas Akins.

Mansfield continued to press and Kilgour was the next to try his luck, stabbing an effort into the grasp of Willis after Quinn had laid him the ball following a corner.

The two combined again on 18 minutes, directly from a corner, as Quinn clipped in for Kilgour to head into the ground.

Stags continued to dominate possession although Alfreton came close when Declan Howe rifled a shot into the body of Alfie Kilgour, preventing Christy Pym from being called upon.

Stags fielded a new eleven for the second half and within six minutes of the restart, Hiram Boateng landed a left-channel free-kick onto the roof of the net.

On 55 minutes, James Gale was a stride away from connecting with Rhys Oates’ square ball inside the box before Keillor-Dunn curled a shot wide a minute later.

Stags revved up the tempo and on 59 minutes Louis Reed took aim from the edge of the box but his effort met the same fate.

Alfreton were again undone on the hour when Oates found the net.

From the right hand side, Gale planted a lovely ball across the face of goal and Oates skipped beyond his marker to tap home at the back post.

Moments later, Keillor-Dunn made way for Jakub Kruszynski, who signed his first professional contract shortly after the end of last season.

On 69 minutes, George Maris should have scored when Oates laid it low to the near post, but Maris struck wide.

Kruszynski added a third for Stags two minutes later when he rifled into the net from 12 yards following a cross from the left.

Stags’ defender George Cooper flung himself in front of a Jordan Thewlis effort to deny Scott Flinders from being needed for the first time.

Alfreton winger Jamie Walker was shown a yellow card on 79 minutes when he hacked down Callum Johnson in front of the visiting dugout.

On 88 minutes, Stags’ new left-back Calum Macdonald completed a good second-half display with Mansfield’s fourth goal when he curled a brilliant effort into the far corner after nicking the ball just outside the box.

And Kruszynski almost had a second goal in the 90th minute with a low drive inside the box but Willis made an excellent stop with his legs.

Flinders made his first save of the game just seconds before the final whistle when he got well behind a 20 yard free-kick from Jamie Walker.
