Youth preview: Stags v Shrewsbury

26 January 2023

Mansfield Town under-19s are back in action on Saturday for a Youth Alliance Cup fixture against Shrewsbury Town at RH Academy (11am kick-off).

The young Stags will head into the clash following last weekend’s 3-0 Youth Alliance League win against Hartlepool United at RH Academy.

A fine display saw a defence which included under-16s’ right-back Elliot Hartmann and Louis Bonser - who featured at left-back - pick up a clean sheet.

This weekend’s opposition were beaten 2-0 by Walsall last time out.

Speaking to www.mansfieldtown.net on the young Stags’ upcoming clash, PDP lead coach Sam Collins said: “It won’t be an easy game. We’ve watched some of their recent performances [to make sure that we’re prepared].

“If we play like we know we’re capable of, we should be alright.”

A successful month for Mansfield Town’s Academy saw right-back Taylor Anderson feature on the bench for the first team on two occasions, away at Walsall on New Year's Day and at home to Barrow on 07 January.

Speaking on the development of players within the under-19s’ setup recently, Sam said: “We’re really pleased. Every player is developing and taking on board what is being asked of them.

“(Striker) McKeal [Abdullah’s] improvement over the last 12 months has been massive. (Versatile-attacker) Ronnie [Kokkinos], (attacker) Alfie [King] and (attack-minded midfielder) Jakub [Kruszynski] are also showing great improvement.

“It’s a group that’s constantly evolving and they’re doing what’s expected of them.”

As ever, all supporters are welcome to attend the game for free at the following venue: RH Academy, Woburn Lane, Mansfield, NG19 7RT.
