Lewis: Togetherness is key

13 December 2023

Mansfield Town midfielder Aaron Lewis has pinpointed Stags’ ‘togetherness’ as the main reason for the club’s encouraging campaign so far.

Mansfield head to Crawley this weekend in what will be a first outing in over two weeks for the amber and blue.

Speaking to iFollow Stags in a news conference yesterday, Aaron said: “I’ve been really pleased with the group togetherness from minute one to where we are now,” he said.

“Everyone is still together and all striving for the same goals.

“We know there are bits that we can get a little bit better at, but I think everyone is working really hard and are on the same track to do that.”

With Saturday’s match at home to MK Dons postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, the squad trained on the all-weather 3G surface at RH Academy.

“We’ve been in training and working towards the next game,” he said.

“We were expecting it to be last weekend but unfortunately with the weather it got called off.

“Everyone is raring to go. That long without a game – you maybe enjoy the first couple of days and then all of a sudden, you’re like ‘I want to play now’.”

On a personal note, he added: “I think it’s [the season] been great. It’s been a good first start to my year at Mansfield.

“I have really enjoyed it but more importantly, I think as a team, it’s gone the way we were hoping for.

“We went unbeaten for so long and we slipped up against Swindon but collectively we all know what our goal is towards the end of the season. We can see the way we’re progressing is perfect.”

On preparations ahead of Saturday’s match at Broadfield Stadium, Aaron said: “We’re trying to play a certain way. I think it showed from the first couple of games that that way is evidently going to work this season.

“It’s more about the game plan.

“We’re working on our own stuff before we do that [analyse the opposition].

“Every game in League Two is going to be tough no matter who the opposition is.

“Whether you’re top or bottom in the table it’s still going to be a tough game so we’ve just got to go out there and try and beat them like we would in any other game.”
