Youth preview: Stags v Notts County

25 August 2023

Mansfield Town under-18s return to action at RH Academy tomorrow when they face Notts County in the Youth Alliance League (11am kick-off).

All supporters are welcome to attend the game for free at the following venue: RH Academy, Woburn Lane, Mansfield, NG19 7RT.

Last Saturday, the young Stags drew 0-0 away to Oldham in the Youth Alliance Cup and were ultimately unable to break the deadlock despite creating a plethora of chances in front of goal.

Professional phase development lead coach Steve Chettle said his side dominated the match.

“It was a frustrating morning,” said Steve. “We dominated the game like we had in previous games, but we couldn’t score.

“We had frequent opportunities from set plays. In the second-half we had one free kick that hit the post, another [effort which] came off the line and another headed the ball over from underneath the bar, all in a five-second spell.

“In the end, we just couldn’t score. It’s been the story of the season so far. We created loads of opportunities but we need to start to be more clinical in front of goal.

“Saturday was another opportunity in the sense that had we scored in the opening 15 to 20 minutes then I think we would have steamrolled Oldham. It’s about taking the opportunity to score goals but I think at some point a team is going to take a pasting.”

The former Nottingham Forest defender has been preparing this week for a return to Youth Alliance action against near-neighbours Notts County.

“It's a local derby so in the first part we need to win our individual battles and earn the right to play some good football. That’s we want to do but usually these are close, tight-knit affairs.

“We have a game plan that we’ve worked on this week and have had a look at a couple of Notts County’s games in the Youth Alliance. Hopefully we can take the opportunities when they arise this week.”
