Lapslie: We’ll build on Stevenage point

10 December 2022

Midfielder George Lapslie lauded Mansfield’s ‘determination’ in earning an ‘important’ point away to high-flying Stevenage.

Lapslie praised Mansfield’s solid defensive display to seal out a side that had found the back of the net in each of their previous ten home league games.

The 25-year-old felt the two sides were closely matched.

“It wasn’t a game of loads of chances,” he said. “I thought both teams were playing quite safe, with long balls and throw-ins down the line.

“It was a game really which we had one [goalscoring] moment each. We had that chance with [Rhys] Oates [inside two minutes] and they had that chance late on.

“We’re obviously not buzzing with a point but [it was a] good point and we’ll build on it.

“When you’re in the game you can feel it was important not to lose that game. That game could have gone either way and I don’t think either team can walk away and say they’ve dominated it.”

Mansfield become the first League Two side to visit the Lamex Stadium and leave with their clean sheet still in-tact this season.

“It was unreal to see, the determination and the grit to not concede a goal,” Lapslie told iFollow Stags.

“If we [keep] playing like that and keep clean sheets we’re going to score goals at the other end.

“[I’m] just buzzing to see us get a clean sheet, I thought the defence deserved it massively.

“[It was a] class point to come away with. I thought the defence was unreal, the lads in front of them, Oatesy [Rhys Oates] working tirelessly, Quinny [Stephen Quinn] working tirelessly.

“We got the point we deserved. It was good to be on the pitch and play in it.”

The Stags were backed by over 600 fans, despite the travelling time period for fans travelling back to Mansfield coinciding with kick-off of England’s World Cup quarter-final match.

“[They were] unreal,” he said. “Hopefully they can all get somewhere to watch the game, not sitting in their car watching it.

“Thank you to them again. I think I say it every week, it feels like we’re playing at home [when we’re away] and I’m just so grateful for them to be here.”
