Stags sign experienced defender

26 February 2021

We are delighted to announce the signing of experienced defender Jake Wright, on a deal that runs until the end of May.

The 34-year-old, who has been training with the Stags over the last few weeks, was most recently with Hereford after a loan spell with Bolton Wanderers last season.

Wright began his career with Bradford City, graduating from the club’s academy before signing for Halifax Town in 2006.

After spells with Crawley Town and Brighton & Hove Albion, the defender made the switch to Oxford United in 2010, following a successful loan period the year prior.

Wright made over 200 league appearances for The Us, before joining Sheffield United in 2016, with whom he spent four years.

Manager Nigel Clough said: “Jake has been training with us for the past six to eight weeks now and he’s not missed a session.

“He has bags of experience and he’s up to speed with everything we’ve been doing in training.

“He is very much a defender; he likes tackling, heading, kicking. He has competed well in training and has not looked out of place at all.

“He’ll challenge for a place, as he’s the sort of lad that, now he’s signed, he’ll want to try and get into the team.”

Wright will wear the number 23 shirt and is available for Saturday's game against Morecambe.
