Youth preview: Notts County vs Stags

1 February 2021

Mansfield Town under-18s face a second EFL Youth Alliance match in the space of four days on Tuesday as they make the short trip to face Notts County.

After defeat to Scunthorpe United at the weekend, the Stags will be looking to bounce back for this match at Greenwich Avenue, home of Basford United.

Jonty Bouch and Max Hurdis featured on the scoresheet for the first time as under-18s against the Iron, two of several individuals who impressed despite the eventual 3-2 scoreline in favour of Scunthorpe.

That performance against the league leaders should stand the youngsters in good stead as they look to put right their previous meeting this season with their Nottinghamshire rivals.

Ten days ago, the Stags fell 3-0 to their visitors from Nottingham in the reverse fixture at The RH Academy.

On top of bragging rights and three points, County also reclaimed the Matt Salmon Trophy, which the two sides compete for in honour of the late physiotherapist who worked for both clubs.

Under-18s coach Mike Whitlow has stated that attention is now turned to reclaiming the silverware.

“The trophy's there, and it means a lot,” he said. “Hopefully, the lads will learn, and let's go and try and win the trophy back.”

Since their last meeting, County have also been in action just once, recording a 3-1 win over Lincoln City.

Despite going a goal down early in the second half, they replied with three unanswered goals of their own to tally back-to-back wins.

Those three points solidified them in second place, two points behind Scunthorpe at the top.

Defeat did see the Stags fall one place to ninth, but they retain a game in hand on the teams around them and remain just seven points behind third-placed Burton Albion.

Tuesday's match will kick off at 11am and will take place behind-closed-doors.
