Youth preview: Stags vs Notts County

4 September 2019

Mansfield Town under-18s are back action this Saturday, when they take on Notts County under-18s at The RH Academy (11am kick-off).

The Stags will be buoyed by their first win of the season going into this one, after a stunning late comeback saw them take all three points at Huddersfield last Saturday.

The amber and blue were trailing for most of the match but late goals from Joshua Scott and Jimmy Knowles completed a remarkable turnaround.

Mansfield will be hoping to build on that performance as they look to make ground on league leaders Doncaster Rovers. The Stags currently trail the division’s pacesetters by five points.

Their opponents sit seventh in the table after a mixed start to the season. The Magpies lost their opening two games but like the Stags, they come into this on the back of a victory.

Last time out, County recorded an impressive 3-1 win over Lincoln City under-18s. This weekend’s opponents will be looking to improve on last campaign’s ninth place finish.

The two sides will also compete for the Matt Salmon Trophy, in memory of the former physiotherapist who sadly passed away in 2017.

A victory will earn Stags the trophy, while a draw or a Notts County win will see the Magpies retain the crown.

Stags' under-18s coach Mike Whitlow believes his side have ‘set a standard’ after their win last week and wants the team to continue their form on Saturday.

“They’ve set a standard and a work ethic,” said Whitlow.

“So if each and everyone of these players maintains progression and maintains wanting to work hard, then the team will take care of itself.”

As ever, all supporters are welcome to attend the game for free at the following venue: The RH Academy, Woburn Lane, Mansfield, NG19 7RT.
