We were 'brilliant' - wing-back

7 September 2019

Wing-back Kellan Gordon hailed a ‘brilliant’ Mansfield Town display as they secured both three points and a clean sheet against Scunthorpe United.

Goals from centre-half Matt Preston and striker Danny Rose in either half sent the Stags on their way to their second victory in Sky Bet League Two this term.

The visiting side sought to reduce the arrears during the second period but the amber and blue limited the opposition to few chances, marking their third clean sheet in the league.

And the 21-year-old feels as though Mansfield’s game management left them deserving three points from their latest fixture.

“It was a brilliant performance,” he began. “I’m just happy to get the three points and the clean sheet, which we’ve been working hard towards.

“We managed the game well, moved the ball well and for us it was about not giving them chances. I felt like we stayed strong and we didn’t give them anything.

“There was high intensity from all the lads and everyone put their bodies on the line when the shots were coming in – the desire we showed paid off today.”

The former Derby County man also touched upon his own personal performance, after another fruitful display in Mansfield colours.

“I just give my all every game – I want to work hard for the team and do everything I can.

“I’m privileged to be playing, so it’s my job to work hard for the team, that’s just how it is really. I would probably say it was [my best Mansfield performance].

“Like I say, I worked hard for the team and put my body on the line, but it’s not really about me it’s about the team with the clean sheet.”

In addition, Gordon believes this afternoon’s triumph can act as a stepping stone to build momentum as the season progresses.

“[The win] gives us something where we want to push on and hopefully it’s that stepping stone to keep getting more points on the table,” he said.

“You could really sense [a lift in spirit] this week. We’ve worked hard and it’s been high intensity, I feel like we took that into the game today.

“The lads after the game were buzzing and we just need to work from this. We need to carry it on and take into the next game without being happy with it.”
