Rest in Peace: Walter Edwards

7 November 2018

Mansfield Town are saddened to learn of the passing of its oldest living player, Walter Edwards, who has died aged 94.

Walt was a speedy right winger who signed for the Stags from Woodhouse Amateurs in July 1947, turning professional in November of that year.

He made his debut in a 1-0 home win over Wrexham on 27 December 1947, with Mansfield being in Division 3 North at the time.

After scoring five goals in 26 matches for Mansfield, he later moved to Leeds United, Leicester City and Rochdale.

He served in Palestine in the Second World War, and at the time of his death was the oldest living former Stag.

Mr. Edwards was a regular attendee of Football in the Community’s Dementia Group, and also volunteered with FITC during its early days.

The club passes its sincere condolences to Walt’s friends and family at this sad time. May he rest in peace.
