Match report: Stags 0-0 Sheffield United

21 July 2018

Mansfield Town impressed in their second home pre-season friendly as they played-out a 0-0 draw with Championship outfit Sheffield United.

David Flitcroft's men headed into the contest following an encouraging 3-1 victory against Derby County in mid-week and this performance too did much to inject confidence into the Stags' ranks, though clear-cut chances were fewer.

Two alterations were made to the line-up from the Stags' victory against the Rams.

Midfielder Jacob Mellis and winger CJ Hamilton replaced Alex MacDonald and Will Atkinson.

Stags forced the game's first corner in the fourth minute, but Otis Khan's flag-kick was hacked clear.

Two minutes later, United's Chris Basham made his way to the goal line before pulling it back to David McGoldrick in the area. And after the striker stabbed it goalwards from ten yards, goalkeeper Conrad Logan scurried across his line to make an expert reflex save.

In the 13th minute, left-back Mal Benning sent a good-looking ball into the box which Richard Stearman headed behind for another Stags' corner. And from it, Benning knocked a left-footed cross into the area, which Craig Davies headed over from seven yards.

Stags' number three continued brightly and made a perfectly-timed challenge on the advancing David McGoldrick on the edge of the Stags' D, following an eye-catching United attack.

In the 21st minute, Basham darted to the goal line to cross low from the right, but Logan got to it first inside his six yard area.

At the other end, Benning slipped it to Davies on the left, and after laying the ball to Khan, the diminutive midfielder struck into the side netting from 20 yards.

United should have been ahead as the game passed the hour-mark. Uncharacteristically, goalkeeper Conrad Logan misplaced a pass to Billy Sharp, but from 10 yards out, the striker sliced his effort wide in haste.

Stags had another chance to break the deadlock on 35. A lovely throughball into the box by Mellis found Davies, who cut in to the right to pull the trigger, only for Basham to fly in front to block the shot.

The pair combined again two minutes later with an almost identical move, but under pressure from a defender, Davies couldn't get his shot away effectively.

Three minutes before the end of the half, Logan sprung to his right to turn behind a 25-yard drive from Mark Duffy.

At the break, Stags' boss David Flitcroft made a double change as striker Lee Angol and midfielder Alex MacDonald replaced Tyler Walker and Neal Bishop.

Two minutes after the interval, United thought they were ahead. Enda Stevens lashed low from inside the box, and after Logan got a hand to it, Sharp applied the finish, but the flag went up for offside.

As the game advanced, neither goalkeeper was seriously tested as both managers made changes aplenty.

On 53, United's Lee Evans directed a harmless 19-yard free-kick at Conrad Logan.

In the 61st minute, Mellis and Khan made way for Calum Butcher and Omari Sterling-James.

United made five changes at the same time, with John Fleck, Lee Evans, Billy Sharp, David McGoldrick and Kieron Freeman being replaced by George Baldock, Ricky Holmes, Ryan Leonard, John Lundstrum and Leon Clarke.

A chance resulted for Basham to fire home on the volley from a United corner, but the defender's effort flew into the North Stand.

On 67, Lundstrum lashed over with a 25 yard attempt before Holmes' effort from inside the area ended the same two minutes later.

Five minutes later, Bobby Olejnik took the place of Conrad Logan in between the sticks, while Mal Benning was replaced by Will Atkinson.

Lundstrum had another crack on goal in the 77th minute but fired well wide.

On 79, Jordan Graham took the place on Craig Davies in attack for the Stags,

In the 81st minute, Caolan Lavery came on for Mark Duffy for the visitors and then soon after, Krystian Pearce was replaced by youngster Lewis Gibbens in the Mansfield defence.

Graham then sent a glancing header narrowly wide from Sterling-James' delivery.

Minutes later, space opened up for Graham to fire towards goal, only to come off team-mate Angol and bobble out for a goal kick.

As the match headed towards its climax, Stags finished the stronger side. Hayden White darted towards the dead ball line but his final cross was well cleared in the game's final opportunity.
