Match preview: Cambridge United vs Stags

12 January 2018

Mansfield Town travel to the Abbey Stadium to take on Cambridge United on Saturday (13 January, 3.00pm kick-off) and this is your definitive guide to the fixture.

Speaking to the local media on Thursday afternoon, manager Steve Evans revealed that skipper Zander Diamond, midfielder Joel Byrom and top scorer Danny Rose are all back in training after their respective injuries.

Striker Kane Hemmings, who limped out of our Emirates FA Cup third round clash with Cardiff last week is rated as '50/50' to be fit for Saturday after a scan revealed a minor hamstring strain.

Defender David Mirfin is still sidelined following knee surgery.

For Cambridge, winger David Amoo and midfielder Paul Lewis could be back in contention after a quick return to training following their respective hamstring and knee injuries.

Winger Piero Mingoia is still out with a groin problem, whilst striker Jabo Ibehre will serve the second game of a three match ban.

Stags are currently on a run of just one defeat in their last 19 games in all competitions, a run of results which has catapulted them to seventh in Sky Bet League Two.

Manager Steve Evans' men sit just one point outside the automatic promotion places following an excellent Christmas period, during which Stags picked up three wins and a draw from their four matches.

Last time out, they drew 0-0 with Championship high-flyers Cardiff City in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The U's have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.

They achieved a solid 0-0 draw away at Colchester United last weekend, which followed back-to-back home wins against Crewe Alexandra and Barnet at the Abbey Stadium.

A thrilling 3-3 draw away to Notts County was preceded by defeats at home to Newport County and away to Port Vale.

Shaun Derry's side currently occupy 12th place in Sky Bet League Two, six points behind the Stags.

Stags came from behind to win in our last meeting with the U's, which took place in September 2016.

Cambridge skipper Leon Legge put the away side ahead early in the second half, before midfielder Jacob Mellis climbed off the bench to equalise from the penalty spot.

With the game heading for a draw, top scorer Danny Rose popped up with his second winner in as many matches to clinch three valuable points.

OVERALL RECORD: W - 16 | D - 11 | L - 13

Trevor Kettle will be the referee for Saturday's fixture and he will be assisted by Declan Ford and Paul Yates, whilst John Farries will be the fourth official.

Hailing from Rutland, near Leicestershire, Mr Kettle has officiated in the EFL for 15 years and usually takes charge of either League One or League Two matches.

The last time Mr Kettle took charge of a Stags' game was our 4-0 win over Port Vale in November 2017.
