Mansfield Town’s under 18s can extend their one-point lead at the summit of the Youth Alliance North East Division when they face title-challengers Oldham Athletic at the Worksop Van Hire Stadium this Saturday (kick-off 12.00pm).
If the game doesn’t fall victim to the ‘Beast from the East’, the Stags will be presented with a difficult task by the Latics, with the second-placed side only three points behind our table-topping youngsters.
However, Oldham have suffered a stuttering run of form of late which has allowed the Stags to move into top spot at the expense of Saturday’s visitors.
Our young guns will be looking to avenge a defeat by the same opponents when the sides met earlier in the season – a 2-1 loss which is the Stags’ only league defeat this season.
The Stags go into the top-of-the-table encounter on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run which includes six wins during the impressive spell.
The youngsters’ last outing was last Saturday when they ran out 4-2 winners at home to struggling York City.
A brace from Riley O’Sullivan, a penalty from midfielder Keaton Ward and a fine finish by Nyle Blake helped the Stags see off a late fight-back by the Minstermen to extend their unbeaten home league run to eight games.
