Youth Preview: Stags vs Grimsby Town U18s

25 April 2018

Mansfield Town under-18s host Grimsby Town in the EFL Youth Alliance at Rainworth Miners Welfare on Saturday, in their first game since securing the title for a third successive season (kick-off 11:00 am).

Tuesday's rearranged game against Bradford City at Rawdon Meadows saw goals from Rhys Sarson and Nyle Blake give Stags a 2-1 win and confirmed John Dempster's team as North East Division champions.

Stags' 13-game unbeaten league run has seen them charge towards the title, winning 11 and drawing two since late October.

They've seen off recent challenges from local rivals Chesterfield, fellow title contenders Oldham Athletic and have secured comfortable away wins at Scunthorpe United and Lincoln City.

Stags have adapted to various settings, winning games at non-league grounds, state-of-the-art 3G pitches and prestigious locations such as St. George’s Park, the national football centre in Burton.

Mansfield are the league's top scorers with 49 goals in 20 games and have the most resolute defence in the division, only conceding seven goals during the 13 game unbeaten run.

Grimsby sit ninth in the league and have had an inconsistent season, winning nine and losing eight. The Mariners have had success against Stags earlier in the campaign though, winning 4-3 on penalties in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup.

Stags knocked-out Saturday's visitors in the FA Youth Cup at Blundell Park thanks to a Sam Jackson wonder strike and the league fixture on the opening day of the season saw Mansfield edge a five-goal thriller, winning 3-2.

For fans wishing to attend the address is: Rainworth Miners Welfare, Kirklington Road, Rainworth, Mansfield, Notts, NG21 0JY.
