Youth preview: Stags vs Rotherham United

28 September 2017

Mansfield Town's under 18s welcome Rotherham United to Kirklington Road on Saturday morning as they return to EFL Youth Alliance action (11.00am kick-off).

The fixture will take place at Rainworth Miners Welfare's Kirklington Road ground.

The under 18s were given a week off from their fixture schedule last weekend following the 4-1 win over Wrexham in the EFLYA Cup the previous Saturday.

Academy manager John Dempster's side have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the campaign, attaining three wins and two draws from their first five league fixtures. And Dempster, 34, has been encouraged by what he's seen from his side thus far.

"From a development point of view, it's been a very pleasing season so far because performances from individuals and the team have improved over time," Dempster said.

"Results have been consistent throughout but as a coach, or an academy manager, the most important thing that you see is performances improving and quality going up, and that's been the case."

Our young guns occupy fourth place in a competitive EFL Youth Alliance table, with the top six sides separated by just three points.

Saturday's visitors Rotherham are on the same points as the Stags, but sit one place above them thanks to a superior goal difference.

Last time out, the Millers defeated Bradford City 2-0 in the Youth Alliance Cup, following a thrilling 5-4 victory away to Chesterfield in the league.

The two games in which they haven't won maximum points have both ended in draws. They recorded a 1-1 stalemate away to York City before being held 1-1 by Notts County at home.
