An effort from winger Harry Anderson then ensured the Imps emerged 1-0 victors from Tuesday's League Two clash away at Forest Green Rovers.
The last meeting occurred just three weeks ago in the first round of the Checkatrade Trophy when the Imps ran out 3-1 winners at One Call Stadium.
Stags went ahead in the first half through winger Alfie Potter, who finished an excellent free-flowing move by stroking it past Paul Farman from the edge of the box.
Defender Elliott Whitehouse got the Imps back on level terms with a header just before the break, then striker Ollie Palmer converted from close range to put Lincoln ahead in the second period.
Stags were chasing the game in the dying minutes and sent goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik up for a corner.
Lincoln cleared the danger and second half substitute Matt Green received the ball and slotted it into an empty net.
