Youth preview: Stags vs Shrewsbury Town

5 October 2017

Mansfield Town's under 18s continue their EFL Youth Alliance Cup campaign on Saturday when they face Shrewsbury Town at Clipstone FC's Worksop Van Hire Stadium (11.00am kick-off).

Stags currently sit top of their group after back-to-back victories over Burton Albion and Wrexham in their first two games.

One team from the group automatically progresses to the next round and Stags are in pole position to do so with a three-point cushion at the top of their mini-league.

A victory on Saturday will mean that academy manager John Dempster's side will need just a point to qualify from their final game against Walsall next month.

Stags are still unbeaten this term and currently lie fourth in the EFL Youth Alliance league table.

Last week, a closely-fought game with Rotherham United ended in a 1-1 draw following a late equaliser by Millers' substitute Tyrone Lewthwaite after Stags' centre-half Lewis Gibbens had opened the scoring in the first half.

Shrewsbury currently occupy eighth spot in the EFL Youth Alliance North West division table, recording two wins, three draws and two defeats from their opening seven games.

They are without a win in their last five games after a run of two defeats and three successive draws.

Their last EFLYA Cup game was a 4-3 thriller; however the Shrews ended on the wrong end of the scoreline as Burton Albion ran out victors.
