Match preview: Stags vs Exeter City

26 October 2017

After three games on the road, Mansfield Town return to One Call Stadium this Saturday as they host Exeter City in Sky Bet League Two (3.00pm kick-off) and this is your comprehensive guide to the fixture.

Stags will be without defender David Mirfin for the contest after he tweaked a hamstring in the 1-1 draw with Barnet last week.

Midfielder Joel Byrom made his comeback from a foot injury in Tuesday's victory over Notts County, whilst defender Zander Diamond is back in full training after his groin problem.

Exeter City were recently dealt a blow when midfielder Jordan Tillson was ruled out for the foreseeable future with a broken metatarsal.

The tough-tackling midfielder played over 40 minutes in last week's 4-1 defeat to Luton Town after sustaining the injury.

Midfielder Ryan Harley is still out injured after being forced off in the Grecians' victory over Cambridge United on the opening day of the season.

The Grecians will, however, be able to welcome back left-back Craig Woodman and winger Lee Holmes after their respective injury lay-offs.

Stags are unbeaten in the last three games and have reacted well to their first home defeat of the season against Swindon Town last time out at One Call Stadium.

Striker Kane Hemmings scored his first goal for the club in our 1-1 draw with Barnet last Tuesday, before frontman Danny Rose's first half effort ensured Stags secured their second 1-1 stalemate in as many games against Newport on Saturday.

Manager Steve Evans' men then defeated Notts County 2-1 on Tuesday - despite making 10 changes - in the Checkatrade Trophy. Goals from striker Lee Angol and winger CJ Hamilton saw Stags win their first points of the season in the competition.

The Grecians are without a win in their last three games and have tasted back-to-back defeats for the second time this season.

After drawing 0-0 away to Wycombe Wanderers, they were thumped 4-1 at home by Luton Town and then lost 1-0 at home to lowly Port Vale last Saturday.

The Grecians ran out 2-1 victors last time the two sides met in April 2017, but controversy surrounded the win.

Left-back Mal Benning put the Stags ahead before the interval and Steve Evans' men were on the way to a vital three points - and a spot in the Sky Bet League Two play-offs - before midfielder Ryan Harley levelled proceedings in the 84th minute.

With the game heading for a draw, Exeter snatched victory in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

Grecians' frontman Reuben Reid went tumbling in the area after a challenge from defender Rhys Bennett and the referee pointed to the spot.

Reid stepped up and dispatched the penalty to send Paul Tisdale's side sixth in League Two.

HEAD-TO-HEAD record: W: 21 | D: 17 | L: 23

The referee for the fixture will be Anthony Backhouse and he will be assisted by Gary Hilton and Paul Graham. Alan Clayton will be the fourth official.

Mr Backhouse's last match in charge of the Stags came in 2013 - a 4-0 victory away to Barrow in the Blue Square Premier-winning season.
