Match preview: Stamford AFC v Stags

20 July 2017

Mansfield Town travel to Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side AFC Stamford on Friday evening in what will be their fourth pre-season friendly in the space of six days (7.30pm kick-off).

The Daniels have made a flurry of summer signings and six new faces were named in the starting line-up for their opening pre-season fixture against Kings Lynn.

In Stags' team news, manager Steve Evans today said: "A few senior lads will be at Stamford and at this stage it is an important match for them.

"The large majority of the squad will train tomorrow morning and get focused on more minutes against Forest."

Stags are now in the thick of pre-season and every first team player has been utilised thus far.

The new-look Stags' first match was during the pre-season tour of Malta in which Steve Evans' men triumphed 5-0 over a Malta Players' Association XI thanks to goals from striker Danny Rose, midfielders Will Atkinson and Paul Digby and a brace from frontman Lee Angol.

Back on home soil, Stags were defeated 3-2 by a strong Sheffield Wednesday side at One Call Stadium, with defenders George Taft and Rhys Bennett getting on the scoresheet against the Owls. However, goals from Jordan Rhodes, Tom Lees and Lucas Joao sealed the victory for the visitors.

Boss Steve Evans then gave nine members of his first team squad 90 minutes for the first time as they won 4-0 against Evo-Stik side Stocksbridge Park Steels. Braces from striker Danny Rose and winger CJ Hamilton clinched the victory for the Stags in South Yorkshire.

Just 24 hours later, a completely different Stags' XI took on Premier League hopefuls Middlesbrough, in a match which finished in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Stags raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to an own goal by Jonny Howson and a cool finish by striker Lee Angol, but Boro hit back through Dael Fry and Mikael Soisalo.

Stamford have only played two pre-season fixtures so far, recording a defeat and a draw.

They lost 3-0 to Kings Lynn in a Lincolnshire Cup tie, before drawing 1-1 with Boston United on Tuesday night.

This will be a 'pay-on-the-day' fixture for Stags' fans.

Admission can be gained by paying an entry fee at the turnstiles at The Zeeco Stadium.
