Match preview: Stags vs Carlisle United

31 December 2017

Mansfield Town kick off 2018 with a home match against Carlisle United on New Year's Day (3.00pm kick-off) and this is your comprehensive guide to the fixture.

Stags will be without midfielder Joel Byrom for Monday's encounter, as he's unavailable due to a groin injury.

Defender David Mirfin will also sit out the clash as he recovers from minor knee surgery.

Carlisle United have two long-term absentees, with neither player set to appear again this season.

Midfielder Jason Kennedy underwent a pelvic operation last month, but the club revealed last week that the 31-year-old will go under the knife again next month, with the recovery period expected to be 12 months.

Influential wideman Nicky Adams was also ruled out for the season when he picked up a cruciate knee ligament injury last month.

Stags' excellent 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday extended their superb run of form to just one defeat in 17 games in all competitions.

They now have seven points from a possible nine over the festive period and can reaffirm their promotion aspirations against Carlisle on Monday.

Manager Steve Evans' side sit level on points with seventh-placed Accrington Stanley, who occupy the last play-off spot.

Carlisle, who are 13th in Sky Bet League Two, were defeated 1-0 at home to Coventry City on Saturday.

The Cumbrians have three wins in their last 10 games in all competitions, including an FA Cup victory over League One side Gillingham.

The two sides' last meeting was an eventful 1-1 draw at Brunton Park back in September.

Cumbrians' frontman Hallam Hope put the home side ahead in the first half, before striker Kane Hemmings missed the chance to draw Stags level from the penalty spot.

Deadline Day signing Calum Butcher then climbed off the bench and executed an exquisite 25-yard lob to salvage a point for the visitors.

OVERALL RECORD: W - 29 | D - 17 | L - 29

Darren Drysdale will officiate the fixture and he will be assisted by Duncan Street and Joe Clark. Steven Rushton will be the fourth official.

Mr Drysdale's last match in charge of the Stags was our 3-1 local derby win over Notts County in September 2017.
