Mansfield Town Ladies will be hoping to be crowned East Midlands’ Women’s Football League Cup champions when they face Long Eaton United on Sunday (2pm kick-off).
After an emphatic run to the final of the competition in which they’ve netted 22 goals in their four matches, the Stagettes will be aiming to end their 2015-16 campaign on a high after missing out on the league title.
In the first round, a clinical Mansfield side ran out 10-0 victors over Sleaford Town, before thrashing Arnold Town 5-1 in the next stage of the competition.
In the quarter-final they came up against Moulton LFC, who they convincingly beat 3-0 and in the semi-final they edged past Bedworth United in a 4-3 thriller after extra-time, with Jemma Douglas being named Player of the Match on that occasion.
Heading into the contest, Lewis Saxby’s team will be looking to bounce back following a frustrating end to their league season, with a 6-1 defeat to Nettleham Ladies.
With Long Eaton United finishing 13 points above the Stagettes in the division, it will be a tough task for Saxby’s side to triumph in the final. The last meeting between the two sides ended with a 2-1 win for Long Easton with Marie Wayne bagging for the Stagettes.
The sides also faced each other in October 2015, which was a superb 3-3 draw with Jemma Douglas, Jess Machin and the aforementioned Wayne scoring in that game.
