Defender Malvind Benning's thunderous volley against Newport County in October has been voted as Stags' Goal of the Year 2015.
Benning's strike received 72% of the overall vote, which took place on the Stags Wall, and will be put forward for the Mitre Goal of the Year competition at the Football League Awards in April.Â
After Craig Westcarr had put the Stags into a 1-0 lead against Newport, Benning doubled the Stags' advantage with a fantastic strike. Jack Thomas picked the ball up in the corner and floated it to Benning on the edge of the box and the defender arrowed it into the top corner.Â
The volley was the former Walsall man's second in as many weeks after smashing one in against Dagenham & Redbridge during a thrilling 4-3 win. The right-footed hit against the Daggers came second in our poll with 14% of the vote, and Jack Thomas' first goal for the club against Portsmouth came third with four percent.Â
A judging panel will review all of the nominated goals, with a selection being shown on Channel 5’s Football League Tonight show. Fans will be given the opportunity to vote for goals to make the final shortlist of five, with the overall winner being decided at the glittering Awards ceremony at Manchester Central on 17 April 2016.
Thank you to everyone who voted.Â
