Blair ecstatic on 'special day'

16 April 2016

Man-of-the-Match Matty Blair says it’s been a ‘special day for everyone’ after the Stags comprehensively beat Notts County 5-0 at One Call Stadium this afternoon.

The 26-year-old was an integral part of the Mansfield midfield on a memorable afternoon which saw striker Matt Green grab a brace, whilst midfielders Mitch Rose, Adam Chapman and winger Reggie Lambe netted a goal each.

The ex-York City man was gleaming with joy following the result, and responded concisely after being asked whether it was the best game he’s been involved for the Stags.

Blair said: “Without a doubt, yes. It’s a special day for everyone at the football club, they don’t come along often that you get to win your derbies five-nil.

“To win five-nil in any game is good, but to do it on derby day and to get Man-of-the-Match is really special – [I’m] feeling pretty good.”

Blair’s marauding run down the right-hand side was the route for Mansfield’s fourth goal which put the result beyond doubt, and he reflected on the impressive assist with a hint of humour.

“I told everyone I was pretty quick – I think people were a little bit surprised! It’s bounced nicely for me to run onto it, I took two or three big touches to overcome my stride pattern and fair play to Reggie (Lambe) who was there to tap in when I put it across goal to him.”

While the attacking exploits receive their rightful plaudits, Blair felt it was right to mention the solid defensive display which kept a clean sheet following the aerial pressure that they had to withstand from the Magpies.

“The finishing side of it was spot on but take nothing away from the defensive side. You’ve got Dan (Alfei), Mal (Benning), Tafs (Ryan Tafazolli) and Collo (Lee Collins) along with Shears (Scott Shearer) as well who have been outstanding all season, not just today’s game.

“I’d say I’ve had a pretty good game but I don’t want to take anything away from the team performance, I was just a cog in a wicked wheel. We were pretty decent today and we should all be very proud.”
