Mansfield Town’s under 18s take on Cambridge City tonight at One Call Stadium in the first round of the FA Youth Cup (7.45 kick-off).
The winners of tonight's tie will be pitted against Peterborough United or Dereham Town in a game that would have to be played by Saturday 21 November.
John Dempster has an almost fully-fit squad to choose from to face the Lilywhites – the youth team’s head coach is without long-term absentees Devante Reittie and Tom Slone however.
Adam Bishop will be missing with a broken wrist, while new signing Tyler Johal from Ilkeston FC will not be included due to his involvement for the Derbyshire outfit in the FA Youth Cup qualifying stages.
Visitors Cambridge could be set to include Joe Warwick, Cameron MacCallum, Charlie Woolfe and Will Sewell in their starting line-up, who all scored in the previous round of the competition against AFC Wulfrunians.
The Stags have been in fine form in the league as they head into the cup competition, topping their respective division having not lost in nine of their 11 games in all competitions.
On Saturday, the youngsters drew 2-2 against Hartlepool United at Clipstone as goals from Tyler Blake and Zayn Hakeem were cancelled out to ensure the match finished all square.
Cambridge have come this far in the FA Youth Cup for the first time in ten years and their manager Darren Wood has led his side to victories over Newmarket, Ely, Norwich United and AFC Wulfrunians.
The East Anglians will be full of confidence in front of goal and Stags’ defensive unit will have to remain wary, as they’ve netted 12 goals in the four Youth Cup encounters they taken part in.
This evening’s referee will be Akil Howson and he’ll be assisted on the sidelines by Aidan Murphy and Anthony Quinn.
Stags’ supporters are encouraged to come along and lend their support to the youngsters in action, as they aim to replicate or better their impressive run to the fourth round last season, when they eventually lost out to Stoke City at One Call Stadium.
Admission is priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions. Entry into the ground will be via the first lower tier turnstiles in the Ian Greaves Stand, closest to the Quarry Lane End.
Our eight-page programme will be available to purchase outside the ground for 50p – head of youth coaching Mark Peters, assistant to John Dempster, gives an interesting insight into the season so far while 16-year-old goalkeeper Sam Wilson features as he talks about last season’s remarkable cup run, where he figured between the sticks as a 15-year-old.
Tyler Blake, who got on the scoresheet in the weekend’s game against Hartlepool United, will be providing knowledge on his teammates and young pros Chris Spencer and Joe Fitzpatrick look back on last season’s cup run.
