Youngsters enjoy emphatic win

Stags’ hierarchy impressed by big victory over Derby County.

There is a positive feeling surrounding our youth development programme today, after our youth team recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory over Derby County in their first pre-season game last night.

The Stags were in cruise control against a Rams side, who are ranked as a category one outfit in the EPPP (Elite Player Performance Plan) system.

The players were encouraged to go out and express themselves both in and out of possession and reaped the rewards for their efforts and free-flowing football.

Goals were scored by Alistair Smith, Morgan Radcliffe, Tom Marriott and Devante Reittie.

Speaking this morning, youth team director Mark Hawkins, who was at the game, said: “It’s been a long six months planning for this season and we couldn’t have got off to a better start.

“The footballing philosophy mirrors the style of the first team. The new scholars have only been together for a few days, but have settled in well to the new surrounding of Brooksby College, which is a second to none facility.”

Our young guns’ next game is on Saturday (18 July) when they face Northampton Town – a team they defeated in the FA Youth Cup last term – at Brooksby College, L14 2LJ. Kick-Off is at 11.00am.
