Ladies hit Arnold for five

7 December 2015

The Stagettes recorded their fourth win in five games as they comprehensively beat Arnold Town 5-1 yesterday

Stags' Ladies raced into an early lead when Jessica Machin latched onto a threaded pass from Nikki Flood before she slotted it in the bottom left corner. Mansfield then got their second when Machin flicked the ball over the top of the defence for Abby Hawkins to drill into the net.

Mansfield’s third came through Machin again; this time the striker outmuscled her marker, cut outside a defender and stormed into the box to fire it low under the 'keeper.

The Stagettes didn’t rest on their three goal advantage as they again progressed forward before the break. Abbie Barlow pressured an Arnold defender into losing possession, then ran along the by-line before her cross-cum-shot was deflected in and the Stagettes went into half-time four goals to the good.

The second half was a more composed one for the youthful Arnold side but Mansfield still looked in control throughout.

Arnold went on a rare foray forward and managed to get themselves on the scoresheet when a defensive mix-up allowed Elli Leathen to sneak in for Arnold and roll the ball past Jay-Leanne Fenton, the Stagettes' 'keeper.

Mansfield stopped any chance of a resurgence though with their 14th away goal in two matches. Becky Braithwaite took the ball from the right-back position, ran beyond the half-way line and struck the ball from 25 yards over the head of ex-Mansfield player Emily Hallam and into the Arnold goal.

The Stagettes face Nettleham Ladies away this Sunday, 13 December at 2pm.
