Stagettes reach Round Three

16 November 2014

Sherwood chopped down by ruthless ladies.

Our ladies team cruised through to the next round of the Nottinghamshire Women’s County Cup with a comfortable 5-1 win over Sherwood Ladies.

Suzi Gelson bagged two goals, whilst Gemma Hodgkinson, Lucy Webster and Emily Bryan were also on the score-sheet.

The Stagettes started in blistering fashion and could have quite easily been two goals to the good in the first couple of minutes as Becky Braithwaite had an effort smothered by the Sherwood ‘keeper, before Jemma Douglas struck the post.

Hannah Bodle was then extremely unlucky not to open the scoring when she let fly with a spectacular 30-yard attempt which rattled the upright.

The relentless pressure soon paid off as Gelson made it 1-0 up just shy of the quarter-hour mark – converting a great right-wing cross by Bryan from just a few yards out.

Hodgkinson quickly doubled the Stagettes’ advantage with a well-placed header, but Sherwood got back in the game – reducing arrears around the half-hour mark to go in 2-1 down at the break.

For a long period in the second half, the contest was surprisingly closer than many would have anticipated, as the hosts battled bravely and enjoyed some spells of pressure.

However, Gelson struck again on 72 minutes to ease the Stagettes’ fears and any hopes of a Sherwood comeback were firmly extinguished when Webster sent a powerful drive into the bottom corner to make it 4-1.

The scoring was completed just a few moments before the final whistle as Bryan, who put in a tremendous individual display, managed to bag a deserved debut goal.

Team: Gascoyne, Unthank, Walton, Bridge, Davis, Bodle, Hodgkinson, Douglas, Webster, Gelson, Braithwaite (Bryan).
