Development Squad draw with Retford

13 November 2014

Badgers battle back to earn point, despite dominant display by the Stags.

Our development squad let slip precious points in the H-K-L North Midlands as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Retford United.

The Stags had established what looked to be a comfortable 2-0 lead courtesy of goals by Cameron Dear and Blaize Punter, but the hosts scored twice in the space of four minutes in the closing stages to earn a share of the spoils.

On a dreadful, bobbly playing surface, which cut up badly, the first half was a tight affair with Mansfield creating plenty going forward and getting several balls into the box, but Retford having more clear-cut chances.

After a goalless 45 minutes, the Stags were much more superior after the re-start and got a reward for their efforts when Dear headed home from Tino Chavundura’s cross, following a sustained spell of pressure.

With 20 minutes left to play, Punter came up from the back to smash the ball into the back of the net amidst a goalmouth scramble and that looked to be that.

However, Retford got back into the game when Luca Gregory was judged to have fouled his man on the edge of the area and the resulting free-kick caught a wicked deflection which evaded a full-stretch Adam Bishop in goal.

Josh Dickinson then curled home an equaliser just a few minutes later - a goal which sparked joyous jubilation and wild scenes amongst the few home fans - as the game ended all square.

Team: Bishop, Walker (Gregory), Shelton, Hutchinson, Punter, Scrivner, Chavundura, McLeod (Roome), Holloway, Dear, Saxton (Thomas). Unused Subs: Blades, Marshall.
