Preview: Stags vs Exiles

8 March 2014

Everything you need to know ahead of Saturday's match with Newport County at One Call Stadium.

TEAM NEWS

Manager Paul Cox could welcome back James Jennings (quad) and Martin Riley (calf) for Saturday’s match. The duo featured in a behind-closed-doors match away to Alfreton Town in midweek.

RECENT FORM

Our team currently occupy 20th position in Sky Bet League Two having accumulated 39 points from 34 matches, but could climb as many as five places with a victory on Saturday.

In our last match we were held to a 0-0 draw away to mid-table Dagenham & Redbridge. To watch highlights from that match, click here.

Our team are just five points behind Newport County, who moved up to 10th position after their 0-0 draw with Fleetwood Town on Tuesday. To watch highlights from that match, click here.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

The reverse fixture between the two teams at Rodney Parade back in September was a ferociously fought clash, which finished in a 1-1 draw.

Chris Zebroski’s opener for Newport on the half-hour mark was cancelled by Sam Clucas’ header midway through the second half.

Newport’s last trip to One Call Stadium came on the opening day of last season. The Exiles were 4-3 winners courtesy of goals from Ismail Yakubu, Tony James, Aaron O’Connor and Jefferson Louis.

However, in September 2011, we hammered the Welsh outfit 5-0 in North Nottinghamshire. Winger Louis Briscoe scored twice and claimed three assists on that memorable day.

OFFICIALS

The Football League has appointed Mr Andy Davies as the referee for this match. He will be assisted by Mr Michael Denton and Mr Dean Treleaven. The Fourth Official is Mr Chris Sarginson.

MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

Our award-winning matchday programme, ‘The Stag’ will be on sale before this fixture.

In this edition, we catch up with teenager Michael Cain, who made his Football League debut in our last home match following his loan switch from Leicester City.

Columnist Jon Griffin reminisces about a popular Welshman who lit up North Nottinghamshire and also represented Saturday’s opponents, Newport County, during his playing career.

In ‘Going for Gold’, the Quarter-Finals begin with a clash between Alan Marriott and Jamie McGuire, but who will boast enough knowledge to progress to the final four?

We also reflect on our young guns’ progress in the FCYA (Midland Division), and take a look at how our ladies team are on the verge of survival in the Midland Combination League.

There are five pages dedicated to our opponents from South Wales, along with all the very latest news from One Call Stadium – including how you can get your Season Ticket for next term.
