Stags fight back to beat Matlock

11 December 2014

Development Squad return to winning ways thanks to goals from Saxton, Thomas and Groves.

Our development squad returned to winning ways in the H-K-L North Midlands League, as they came from behind to beat Matlock Town, 3-1.

The visitors went ahead inside the opening 10 minutes, but Denham Saxton's delicious free-kick quickly drew the Stags level.

After a closely-fought contest in constant swirling winds and lashing rain at the Worksop Van Hire Stadium, no further goals followed until the closing stages, when Mansfield upped the ante and got their reward as Luke Thomas showed a fine piece of skill to fool the visiting 'keeper, before finding the target with a low shot.

Rory Thomson would have got on the score-sheet had the officials noticed his teasing corner had crossed the line, but substitute Liam Groves put the game to bed in stoppage-time with a deflected effort from a tight angle that beat the Matlock 'keeper at his near-post.

It was a great win for our development squad, who will be eager to record another three points when they entertain Dunkirk on Thursday 18 December (7.45pm).
