Our youth team secured runners-up position in the FCYA (Midland Division) with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Corby Town earlier this afternoon.
John Ramshaw’s team ran riot in the early exchanges and were 4-0 up after just 19 minutes, thanks to strikes from Tyler Blake, Liam Carver, Ollie Roome and an own goal.
Corby pulled one back through Dave Boddington shortly after the re-start, but Carver completed the scoring with a swerving 35-yard thunderbolt on the hour mark.
On a mild afternoon in Clipstone, the Stags made a perfect start and took the lead inside 30 seconds as Blake latched onto a pull-back by Luke Thomas and rifled a powerful low drive into the corner.
Things became even better when Liam Carver doubled the lead on seven minutes – latching onto a cross-field ball by Thomas, before taking a touch, twisting away from his marker and slotting home.
Louis Danquah put in an impressive display at left-back and played a big part in our third goal only a few moments later, when his low ball was turned into the net by a Corby defender.
Danquah claimed another assist on 19 minutes with a pin-point near-post corner, which was headed into the net by Roome for his second goal in just three days.
The Stags continued to apply one-way pressure, but couldn’t add to their lead before the interval.
Rory Thomson had a swerving 35-yard half-volley saved by the visiting ‘keeper, whilst Luke Thomas saw a header ricochet off the upright, having latched onto a long cross by Carver.
Thomas won a penalty only a few moments before half-time when he tricked the ‘keeper into a foul, but Roome’s subsequent effort from 12-yards sailed over the target.
Boddington netted a consolation for the visitors within three minutes of the re-start, before a sumptuous long-range strike by the lively Carver sealed a comfortable 5-1 win.
