Stagettes lose final match

6 April 2014

Our ladies team let slip a two-goal cushion as they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat in their final match of the Midland Combination League campaign at Curzon Ashton.

The Stagettes produced a commanding first half performance and took the lead when Jemma Douglas successfully converted a spot-kick, after being fouled inside the area.

Becky Davis soon made it 2-0 when she found her way into an excellent position at the near-post and converted Charlotte Montgomery’s right-wing cross.

At half-time, the Stagettes looked in total control and seemed almost certain to end the season on a winning note, but that proved not to be the case as Curzon Ashton fought back after the re-start.

Laura Garner halved our advantage on the hour mark with a superb strike into the top corner, before Clare Daly equalised with less than a quarter-of-an-hour left to play.

The hosts completed the comeback to snatch a 3-2 win, when substitute Masa Butler evaded the offside trap to score with a header from Emma Lambourne’s cross.

The Stagettes could have earned a share of the spoils deep into stoppage-time when Montgomery’s header from Becky Braithwaite’s cross cannoned back off the woodwork.

Team: Clarke, Davis, Davie, Walton, Bridge, Hard (Kiernan), Bodle, Potter, Braithwaite, Douglas, Montgomery.
