Remember the day: 16 April

16 April 2014

Anniversary celebrations to mark vital win over Hereford United.

On Tuesday 16 April 2013, Mansfield Town travelled to Edgar Street knowing that only a win would keep the destiny of the Conference Premier – and with it the only automatic promotion place to the Football League – in our own hands.

The match was nerve-jangling from the outset and the Bulls struck a dagger blow through our sense of hope and expectancy by racing into an early lead thanks to a strike by Ryan Bowman.

Our team desperately needed an equaliser to keep alive their title dreams and found it approaching the end of a nail-biting first half, when Matt Green headed home Lindon Meikle’s cross.

After the re-start, the Stags began the onslaught in search of a winner. Chances came and went – Adam Murray, Green, Lindon Meikle and many others all went close as minutes ebbed away with sheer agony.

Then, deep into stoppage-time, came the goal that changed everything and led to one of those spine-tingling moments of joy, relief and sheer unadulterated pandemonium.

Alan Marriott’s long downfield ball was beautifully flicked on by Matt Rhead, and Green, despite being wrestled by a Hereford defender, smashed the ball into the net to secure a famous win.
