Our youth team eased into the Third Round of the FCYA League Cup with a comfortable 6-0 victory over MMU last night.
Jack Thomas and Joe Flint bagged two goals apiece, whilst Ross Lamb netted for the third time in as many outings. Kevin Hemagou was our other scorer.
After a closely fought opening half-hour, our side broke the deadlock through Lamb, who cut inside from the right flank and found the target with a bullet 20-yard drive.
Just moments later, Thomas doubled our advantage as he latched onto Hemagou’s piercing through ball, before rounding the keeper to slot home.
Hemagou almost put the result beyond doubt before half-time, when he showed excellent strength to accelerate away from his marker, but was denied by the keeper after a 50-yard run.
Nevertheless, any hopes that MMU harboured about a comeback were extinguished shortly after the re-start as Flint headed home from a left-wing cross to make it 3-0.
Keiran Coupe came close to adding a fourth midway through the second half, when he whistled a powerful drive only inches wide of the top left corner.
Our youngsters then enjoyed a fruitful last quarter-of-an-hour, in which they breached the visitors’ backline on several occasions, and added three more goals.
Hemagou was again the provider when Flint made it 4-0 with a low drive into the bottom corner on 77 minutes, following a sustained spell of pressure.
With MMU tiring, Hemagou drilled a low 20-yard shot into the bottom corner, before celebrating in style with a well-timed summersault back-flip.
Just three minutes of time, the rout was completed when Lamb’s long ball forward found Thomas, who superbly spun away from his marker inside the area and fired home.
Our youngsters will now face local rivals Ilkeston in the Third Round, with a date still to be confirmed.
