Manager to play in charity matches

1 May 2013

Manager Paul Cox has agreed to make special guest appearances in eagerly-awaited charity matches, which are due to take place in North Nottinghamshire this summer.

On Sunday 12 May, our supremo will form part of a Mansfield Town side that will lock horns with the SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) at One Call Stadium (kick-off 1.00pm).

The SSAFA Forces Help team were formed when Jack Hawksley, a young soldier from Pinxton, was seriously injured whilst serving in Afghanistan last year.

Jack’s injuries from the blast, which occurred just two days before he was due to complete his tour, were so severe that he needed two below-knee amputations.

Profits raised from this charity encounter will go directly towards the SSAFA, whilst admission prices have been set at £3 Adults and £1 Senior Citizens/Under 16s.

On Sunday 02 June, Cox will be amongst Stags and Spireites legends, as Jamie Walker’s annual charity match takes place at Glapwell FC’s Hall Corner Ground (kick-off 3.00pm).

Jamie, who was a member of our academy a decade ago, underwent intensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in 2005.

He received the all-clear two years later, but still has regular appointments at King’s Mill Hospital, to whom a donation will be made following this match.

Jamie’s dad, former Chesterfield and Rotherham United striker Phil Walker, has so far raised over £75,000 for cancer and children’s charities through the annual charity match.

Former One Call Stadium favourites who are set to participate this year include Alex Baptiste and Tom Naylor, whilst ex-Spireite frontman Jamie Ward will also feature.

Admission prices are £5 Adults and £3 Concessions, and we encourage all fans to show their support for two thoroughly worthwhile causes.
